Atlanta’s transit system was awarded $2 million Thursday as the federal Homeland Security Department announced $399 million — roughly the same as the year before — to safeguard the nation’s critical facilities. While the department expressed concern about the country’s biggest urban transit systems, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority’s fiscal 2006 grant fell $600,000 short of the 2005 level.
