UN team meets new Islamist rulers of Mogadishu
The United Nations made its first formal contact with Mogadishu’s new Islamist rulers on Monday as their leader said Osama bin Laden’s remarks on Somalia had “nothing to do” with his movement. Two Nairobi-based U.N. officials flew into a tiny airport on a beach north of the capital before heading for a city hotel to meet senior members of the Islamic movement that seized Mogadishu from U.S.-backed warlords, witnesses said.
