The American ambassador to Venezuela denied Wednesday that U.S. officials were urging opponents of President Hugo Chavez to boycott December’s presidential vote. “We are not taking any position over the question of abstention,” U.S. Ambassador William Brownfield told reporters. He was responding to allegations by Information Minister Willian Lara who said earlier this week that U.S. Embassy officials met with presidential candidates who side with the opposition and urged them to pull out of the election campaign ahead of the Dec. 3 vote.
