Colombia called on to help the displaced

For thousands of Colombians uprooted by violence each year, the real struggle to survive begins only after they arrive empty-handed and homeless in Bogota and other cities, a top United Nations official said Tuesday. “Victims of violence who are forced to abandon their homes don’t have any real possibility of protecting their rights and safety or assuring their basic necessities are met,” said Walter Kalin, the U.N. secretary general’s representative on internally displaced peoples.
