Mexico’s top police official said Monday that homicides nationwide dropped nearly 18 percent from 2000 to 2005, and that things are improving in Nuevo Laredo, a northern border city plagued by murder and drug-related mayhem. But Public Safety Secretary Eduardo Medina acknowledged that many Mexicans continue to feel unsafe. “On a national level, from 2000 to 2005, we have seen a reduction of 17.6 percent in homicides,” Medina told a news conference at the presidential residence in the Mexican capital.
