Secretary-General Kofi Annan, responding to a call for assistance from Iraq’s new premier, has agreed to help muster political and economic support for the country’s new government, the U.N. spokesman said Friday. Annan’s pledge came after Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari met Thursday with the secretary-general and requested support in launching an international effort to help stabilize the country as the new government struggles to rein in a virulent insurgency.
