Opponents of East Timor’s Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri were to meet to work on a proposal for giving President Xanana Gusmao power to dissolve parliament and appoint a transitional government. Weeks of unrest in Asia’s poorest nation, widely blamed on the unpopular Alkatiri, has seen at least 21 people killed, some 133,000 displaced from their homes and the arrival of more than 2,200 foreign peacekeepers.
