The United Nations was to make an urgent appeal for nearly 20 million dollars in aid to East Timor amid indications the number of people who fled their homes due to weeks of violence was growing. The announcement came with rebel soldiers and the government still in deadlock over calls for Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, who has been widely blamed for the violence, to resign from office.
