Shiite politicians failed Tuesday to resolve the deadlock over the formation of the new Iraqi government after meeting to discuss the opposition of Sunni and Kurdish parties to the Shiite nominee for prime minister. The Shiite alliance, the largest bloc in parliament, has stood behind Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari as their candidate since he won the nomination in February. But Sunni and Kurdish politicians demanded the names of new candidates, leaving the Shiites little choice but to replace him if they want to break the political deadlock. Full Story
