Security scanners are to be used at Scottish railway stations in an effort to identify passengers carrying dangerous weapons. The airport-style security system has already been tested on platforms in London stations and judged to be “extremely successful”. Alistair Darling, the Transport Secretary, who made the announcement yesterday, said Glasgow and Edinburgh stations were in line for the new technology along with Manchester, Leeds and Cardiff.
