In the deadliest clash since a Maoist ceasefire ended in Nepal this month, 10 rebels were killed by the army on Thursday as tens of thousands of people protested King Gyanendra’s plans to hold municipal elections. The fighting took place in Syangja a Moaist hotbed in west Nepal, in what an army officer called “retaliatory action” after the guerrillas fired on soldiers. “We have 10 rebels confirmed dead and soldiers also seized two rifles, crude bombs, materials used to make land mines and Maoist documents,” the officer said.
