East Timor’s president has formally opened a consulate in Indonesia’s neighbouring West Timor province in an effort to strengthen relations between the two nations. In a ceremony attended by local officials and several of his former militia enemies, including ex-militia chief Eurico Guterres, President Xanana Gusmao said the mission should serve as a means to “foster closer relations” between Jakarta and Dili.
