The European Union said on Wednesday that Egypt’s decision to allow a rival to President Hosni Mubarak to be convicted and sentenced to prison called into question the country’s commitment to democratic reforms. Ayman Nour, leader of the liberal Ghad (Tomorrow) Party and Mubarak’s main challenger in September elections, was sentenced to five years in jail on forgery charges last week and plans to appeal the ruling.
