Bangladeshi police on Friday fired tear gas and used batons to disperse hundreds of Islamic protesters, police and a witness said. At least 50 people were injured. Police took action after the protesters broke through a barricade during a rally in the capital of Dhaka, a Metropolitan Police official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press. The demonstrators smashed at least six buses and threw stones at police, the official said. Four police officers were among the injured, although none was badly hurt, he added. Police detained at least 26 protesters. Mazharul Islam, a local journalist who was at the scene, also told The Associated Press that the violence started when a group of protesters broke through a police barricade. Full Story
