Two years after his arrest, Saddam Hussein’s Baath Party still casts a shadow over Iraq’s attempts to build a democracy, dividing politicians over whether former members should be allowed to run for parliament. Ahead of Thursday’s vote, the commission in charge of purging senior Baath members from public posts tried to get about 100 candidates barred from the race.
