Italy’s government has called an emergency meeting with leaders of Alpine valley communities to try to end violent protests against a planned high-speed train line that threaten to spoil the 2006 Winter Olympics. Tens of thousands of people fearing environmental damage from the project have demonstrated this week in Val di Susa, a valley on the French-Italian border connecting Turin with mountain venues for the Games which kick off in two months.
