Australian Prime Minister John Howard said he wanted an independent inquiry into the alleged involvement of the country’s monopoly wheat exporter in the oil-for-food scandal in Iraq. Howard initially defended the Australian Wheat Board (AWB) after a UN report charged last week that the regime of former strongman Saddam Hussein received more than 220 million US dollars from its contracts under the programme.
