Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas aims to start disarming small militant groups soon and will insist that the Islamic Hamas faction puts down weapons after January elections, a top aide said on Tuesday. The president’s chief of staff, Rafiq Husseini, told Reuters in an interview that following Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, Abbas wanted to end local lawlessness.
