A woman standing in this month’s elections in Afghanistan has survived a gun attack in the east of the country. Safia Siddiqi was unharmed but three others were reported wounded in the attack by unidentified gunmen in Nangarhar province. It was the latest in a series of violent incidents ahead of the parliamentary and provincial elections. Nearly 2,800 people are contesting the 18 September ballot.
