For more than 20 years, Khamisa Youssef had dreamed of the day when Saddam Hussein would pay for the deaths of her husband and six sons. Now, she says that day is coming soon. Iraqi officials yesterday announced the first criminal case against Hussein for the 1982 massacre of Shi’ite villagers, including Khamisa’s family, in this town about 50 miles north of Baghdad. The court has 45 days to set a trial date. The crackdown was in retaliation for an assassination attempt staged by the villagers at the height of Hussein’s power. Iraqi investigators say at least 150 people were killed, but townspeople say many more were reported as missing. Hussein and three others accused in the massacre may receive the death penalty if convicted. Full Story
