Prime Minister John Howard hailed the role of the Iraqi security forces in freeing an Australian hostage in Baghdad amid reports that an Australian Islamic cleric negotiated his release. Howard, whose government has some 900 troops in Iraq in support of the US-led coalition, was commenting on the freedom Wednesday of 63-year-old engineering contractor Douglas Wood after 47 days in captivity.
