Several weeks of escalating violence, culminating in the worst bomb attack in Afghanistan for over two years, indicate the run-up to September’s parliamentary elections will be bloody, analysts said. The suicide attack on Wednesday in the Taliban birthplace of Kandahar targeted the visiting police chief of the capital Kabul, who was among at least 20 people killed.
