Scenes reminiscent of the anti-apartheid struggle were played out in the streets of Cape Town townships as barricades were burnt and people confronted police during illegal marches. Widespread protests in the wake of land invasions resulted in residents of informal settlements in Khayelitsha and Gugulethu taking to the streets on Monday. They burnt barricades as they faced off against the police over the city’s housing crisis and what they called poor service delivery. The crowd demanded immediate action from the government over services. Police fired teargas and rubber bullets in both townships to disperse crowds who marched and barricaded several streets in the area before setting the barricades alight. Full Story
