The United Nations said on Wednesday it was wary of reacting too hastily to reports militia fighters shot or hacked to death 18 people in eastern Congo as it did not want to endanger the lives of peacekeepers.The interim governor of Congo’s South Kivu province said on Tuesday 18 people were killed, many more injured and about 50 kidnapped and hauled off into the forest during an attack on a string of villages northwest of the town Bukavu. “We can’t put the lives of peacekeepers at risk on the basis of unreliable information. We need to find out who was involved and how we can react,” said Thierry Provendier, military spokesman for the U.N. mission in Democratic Republic of Congo.Full Story
