Alleged al-Qaeda cell financier takes stand

The suspected financial mastermind of an al-Qaeda cell accused of helping plot the Sept. 11 attacks depicted himself in court Tuesday as a legitimate businessman and moderate Muslim. Mohamed Ghaleb Kalaje Zouaydi, a Syrian-born real estate promoter, is among 24 suspects on trial in Madrid as alleged members of a Spanish al-Qaeda cell. He said one money transfer to an alleged terrorist was for a used car and the money was returned when the deal fizzled. He is accused of using his business as a front for financing the Spanish cell and funneling money to Muslim extremists in other countries, including Germany, which was a staging ground for the 2001 terrorist attacks in the USA.Full Story
