Taiwan opposition leader Lien Chan called for peace with China Wednesday as he toured historic mainland sites nearly 60 years after his party was ousted from power by the communists and fled across the Strait. Lien’s trip has been billed as a journey of peace to seek reconciliation with an old enemy, but he said relations were at a “grave stalemate.” As he left Taiwan Tuesday he was accused of betrayal by egg-throwing crowds who favor independence for the self-governing island.
