A nationwide strike over a tax on staple foods closed banks and shops, left streets deserted and disrupted government services in the capital of Niger on Tuesday. In the second city of Zinder, 900 kilometers (500 miles) east of Niamey, some people tried to protest but were stopped. “Some youths tried to burn tires on the road but were dispersed by security forces,” Zinder Governor Abba Malam Boukar said on national radio.
