Venezuelan authorities, a few weeks after being criticized by Colombia for tolerating the presence of Colombian guerrillas, have arrested a rebel from across the border who was one of his insurgent organization’s principal drug-runners, officials here said. President Alvaro Uribe telephoned his Venezuelan counterpart, Hugo Chavez, late Wednesday to thank him for the arrest in Venezuela of a suspected Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla who was transporting 600 kilos of cocaine. Uribe’s government until last week was embroiled in a deep diplomatic crisis with Venezuela over the capture in Caracas of another key FARC rebel by Bogota-paid bounty hunters late last year.
