Peace negotiators for the Indonesian government and the main rebel group in the Aceh province sat down together in Helsinki to hammer out a lasting ceasefire for the region hardest hit by last month’s tsunami disaster. Delegates from the Indonesian government and separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) arrived in Helsinki on Thursday, initially meeting separately with former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari, who is mediating the talks. On Friday, the two parties met face-to-face for the first time since a truce between them broke down and the government in May 2003 declared martial law and launched a major military offensive in the province.
