Ready for the worst

Living between two major corridors of traffic has North Platte in a dangerous position. With major chemicals being shipped along the rails and on the highways the odds of having a Hazmat disaster are high. Many agencies are preparing for the worst. The North Platte Fire Department has been training for any Hazmat disaster. They will be the first responders if an accident were to occur. Captain Brian Shay of the NPFD said, “With Interstate 80, Bailey Yards and Highways 83 and 30 we are in the middle of a major transportation area. Anything produced in the U.S. is shipped through here.” Shay said this includes chemicals, explosives, corrosives, weapons, radioactive material, and biological substances. Full Story
