Israel began easing the pressure on the Palestinians as it acknowledged Mahmud Abbas’s efforts to persuade armed factions in the Gaza Strip to call a halt to their campaign of attacks. While Israeli and Palestinian security officials renewed contacts, the new Palestinian leader expressed hope he could reach a deal with the likes of Hamas during an intensive round of talks in the Islamist movement’s Gaza stronghold. “With the help of God, I hope that our dialogue can succeed,” Abbas told reporters Thursday after attending prayers at Gaza City’s main mosque at the start of the Muslim holidays of Eid el-Adha.
