Task force gets terror-fighting robots

Two robots capable of sniffing out and disposing of bombs as well as detecting radiation and chemical agents are among the gear emergency management officials in Southwestern Pennsylvania will add to their anti-terrorism arsenal this year. The 6-foot-5 Andros F6-A robots made by Remotec Inc. of Oak Ridge, Tenn., will be equipped with 360-degree rotating cameras and a telescoping claw arm. It can slink down narrow aircraft aisles, squat to less than 3 feet in height, scoot around obstacles and go up and down stairs, all the while beaming back images to an operator up to 2,500 feet away. If necessary, Andros “will take one for the team” and sacrifice itself by detonating an explosive device that cannot be disarmed, said Alan Hausman, equipment specialist for the Region 13 anti-terrorism task force, which covers Allegheny and a dozen other Southwestern Pennsylvania counties.
