Visiting British State Minister for Foreign Affairs Douglas Alexander on Tuesday said Bangladesh should address the issues of terrorism, human rights and corruption to attract foreign investment in view of growing global competitiveness. “In view of the increasing globalization, foreign investors and observers not only look into the narrow commercial benefits; inevitably and appropriately they look into the issues of governance, human rights and corruption,” Alexander told a press conference at Sheraton Hotel. Alexander, also the state minister for the Commonwealth office, suggested involvement of huge non-resident Bangladeshis in Britain for increased bilateral trade relations and flow of direct foreign investment (FDI)to Bangladesh. He added that Britain was keen to promote business ties with Bangladesh, particularly in the fields of textiles, energy and information communication technology. British High Commissioner in Dhaka Anwar Chowdhury joined the press conference along with the state minister, whose brief visit to Bangladesh was featured by meetings with Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, opposition leader and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan and foreign ministry adviser Reaz Rahman. Alexander said issues of common concern like international terrorism, attacks on the opposition leader and his country’s envoy in Dhaka, and incident of arms haul in Chittagong earlier this year largely dominated his talks with Bangladesh leaders.
