As night fell on Barre City, flashing lights surrounded the Times Argus building. Police, fire, homeland security and Haz-mat teams were called to the area’s largest newspaper. “There’s been guys running around here in suits and helmets,” said J. Henderson who works nearby. A suspicious letter prompted the all-out response. An editor at the paper opened the envelope and was exposed to a mysterious white substance sealed inside. “Some of the powder did spill out and they were exposed to it. My understanding is it was about a half dozen other people in close proximity when it was opened. And about two dozen people in the building total,” explained Vt. State Police Lt. David Harrington.
