The first test evacuation of local schools in case of a nuclear or chemical emergency failed Thursday when nearly 1,000 students were left without transportation out of the disaster zone. “It worked fine up until we ran out of buses,” said Town Manager Jerry Remillard, who is also Brattleboro’s emergency management director. “This is no one’s fault, but there were some problems with the plan.” More than a dozen private and public schools were scheduled to load students on buses to test the response time in the event of a catastrophe.
