Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the bombing of a southern Philippines market that left 14 people dead, a military spokesman said. Police and military raided the suspects’ hideout on the outskirts of General Santos city on Wednesday and arrested three men and two women, Lieutenant-Colonel Buenaventura Pascual said without naming the suspects. The authorities found a mortar shell, a hand grenade, blasting caps, and a powdery white substance at the building, he told reporters. An improvised explosive device ripped through the public market of General Santos, one of the biggest cities in the southern Philippines on Sunday, killing 14 people and wounding 70 others. The region has been rocked by bombing attacks in recent years allegedly carried out by militants with alleged ties to foreign terror groups.
