Japan is enraged at North Korea for allegedly lying about the deaths of two of its citizens the Stalinist state kidnapped, with commentators warning the deception has set back the chances of reconcilation with the outside world. Japan has concluded that North Korea gave other people’s remains to a visiting delegation last month in hopes of convincing Japan that two people abducted during the Cold War to train spies had died. “We are so disgusted that we are at loss of words,” the influential liberal daily Asahi Shimbun said. It said North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, known as general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, “must realise how angry the Japanese people are.” “General Secretary Kim must not forget sanctions are among Japan’s choices,” the Asahi said. Japan on Wednesday lodged a protest with North Korea for its dishonesty and threatened to slash food aid to the cash-strapped country. The incident comes as North Korea stalls on whether to return to six-nation talks aimed at ending its nuclear ambitions.
