Israeli and Egyptian leaders are meeting in Jerusalem to discuss Israel’s plans to withdraw settlers and soldiers from the Gaza Strip in 2005. Cairo has offered to check a possible post-pullout power grab by Gaza militants by toughening border security and training Palestinian police teams. Egypt is also expected to tell Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of Syria’s readiness to resume peace talks. His minority government meanwhile faces collapse because of its budget plans. Shinui, the secular party that is the lone partner left in Mr Sharon’s Likud-led coalition, is set to vote against the budget over the issue of funding for ultra-Orthodox religious parties.
