The trial of Abimael Guzman, leader of Peru’s Shining Path terrorist group, was postponed until next week after prosecutors asked at Friday’s hearing that the judge be disqualified, delaying for the second time in a week the start of the proceedings. Held under tight security, Friday’s less-than-two-hour session featured several motions, among them one from the attorney general’s office to replace Judge Dante Terrel. The judge’s conduct has been questioned by both the attorney general’s office and the new anti-terrorist prosecutor, Guillermo Zavala, who blame the magistrate for allowing the radical and violent Maoist former guerrillas to shout Shining Path slogans during the first session of the trial on Nov. 5.
