A deeply pessimistic view is showing itself in some of the analyses of European-American relations, wherein no matter who wins the American election next week, one side or another in the trans-Atlantic divide will be disillusioned, and the consequences for American-European relations will be bad. If Bush wins, this reasoning goes, pro-Kerry Europe will be astonished at what it will see as the bad judgment of the American electorate, which, despite the quagmire in Iraq and the bad blood with Europe, will have chosen the unilateralist cowboy from Texas rather than the reassuring multilateralist from Massachusetts.
