The commander of U.S. military operations in Latin America pledged Tuesday in an emotional farewell that the United States would support Colombia in its war against Marxist rebels, calling them “the incarnation of hatred, ignorance and intolerance.” U.S. Army Gen. James Hill is retiring next month after 36 years in the military, the last two as chief of the Miami-based U.S. Southern Command, which heads military operations in Latin America and the Caribbean.
