The UN Children’s Fund (Unicef) has cast doubt at the prospect of peace returning to northern Uganda. This is because brutal attacks on civilians by pockets of Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels continue. “Signs of attenuation in the conflict have emerged recently, with incidents of LRA rebels being captured by or surrendering to the Ugandan army being higher this year than in the past two years,” Unicef noted in a statement to AFP on Wednesday. “But despite these, there are no clear indications of a swift resolution of the conflict, as military engagements between the army and LRA continue, even in southern Sudan, so do brutal attacks by small pockets of LRA members against civilians in internally displaced people’s (IDP) camps, villages and roads,” it added.
