The Israeli Army killed nine Palestinian fighters on Saturday in its continuing operation in the Gaza Strip, and the Palestinian leader, Yasir Arafat, asked the world to stop “the criminal and racist” military campaign. The Israelis, who began the operation on Wednesday, say they are trying to diminish or stop the firing of short-range Qassam rockets that can hit Israel from Gaza. The operation has focused on northern Gaza, including Beit Hanun and the Jabaliya refugee camp, a warren of narrow streets with more than 100,000 inhabitants. The alleys of Jabaliya are filled with armed Palestinians, many of them masked, and many children and families who have emerged from crowded apartments to watch and to escape the intense heat and humidity.
