A website used by Chechen warlord Shamil Basayev to claim responsibility for the Beslan school siege was shut down by the Lithuanian government yesterday under heavy pressure from Russia. Although a Lithuanian Foreign Ministry spokesman said last week that the Kavkaz Center website would be allowed to continue operating because it broke no laws, the State Security Department reversed that position yesterday, seizing the site’s server from a Vilnius apartment and launching an investigation into whether it had incited “inter-ethnic strife” while broadcasting the messages of Mr. Basayev and other Chechen rebels.
