A coalition plan to use flying squads of Australian Federal Police officers in neighbouring countries was designed to keep terrorists out of Australia, Prime Minister John Howard says. Mr Howard will release a $100 million plan to boost Australia’s ability to combat terrorism in the region by using AFP flying squads. Under the five-year plan, six new police teams would be set up, two specialising in high-tech surveillance, two focusing on counter-terrorism intelligence and a further two including terrorism investigators and experts in tracking financial dealings.
