A senior US diplomat met with Libyan officials to discuss the removal of remaining US sanctions on Tripoli ahead of next week’s deadline for the measures to be lifted, a move tied to the payment of compensation for the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, the State Department said. William Burns, the assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern affairs, met with the Libyans for three hours in London ahead of Libya’s September 22 deadline for the United States to lift the sanctions, which would pave the way for payment of the next tranche of compensation to families of those killed in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, the department said.
