Italy, faced with another hostage-taking of its nationals in Iraq, put its diplomatic efforts for the release of two women aid workers into overdrive. As a junior minister was dispatched to the Middle East to enlist support from Arab governments, Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said his government had opted for a “strategy of all-out contacts” to secure their release. After meeting 16 representatives of Arab League member states in Rome, Frattini, who also rang his Jordanian counterpart Marwan Moasher seeking help in freeing charity workers Simona Pari and Simona Torretta, said in a written statement that he felt reassured.
