The United Nations opened a new disarmament centre for former fighters of the LURD rebel group at Voinjama in the remote northwest of Liberia on Wednesday, but reiterated that it would wind up its nationwide disarmament programme by the end of October. “The exercise started in Voinjama on a peaceful note according to initial reports we obtained from our field officers there,” Molley Passaway, the spokesman of Liberia’s National Commission on Disarmament, Demobilisation, Reintegration and Rehabilitation, told IRIN.
