A squad of men, either sociopaths or contract killers employed by storekeepers who want to “clean up” downtown, is roaming the pre-dawn streets of South America’s largest city bashing homeless indigents to death while they sleep. The brutal murders of six beggars and the wounding of 10 others in the past week has spotlighted the dangers facing the homeless in the sprawling metropolis, as well as Brazil’s history of vigilante violence.
