The American ambassador, responding to an appeal from the Afghan government, helped broker a cease-fire on Tuesday in the four-day-long fighting in western Afghanistan and won an agreement from the aggressor, a militia commander named Amanullah Khan, to withdraw his troops, American and Afghan officials said. “We have been working very closely with the government of Afghanistan to bring about an immediate end to the fighting, to disengage the combatant forces some 20 to 30 kilometers from each other, and to set the conditions for enduring stability in that part of the country,” said the ambassador and special envoy to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad.Full Story
